History

Lamont is located 12 miles Southeast of Kern County's seat of government, Bakersfield.  That's far too general an interpretation, since Bakersfield now essentially butts up against Lamont in a couple of areas.  Lamont was established in 1923 by Arthur McFadden.  If you went to grade school in the area then you know that McFadden named Lamont after the Scottish clan that his family belonged to.  Although the second version claims that McFadden named the town after his daughter, whom he had already named after his clan.  In either case the end result was the same.

The first post office in Lamont was established as a rural station as a satellite of the Bakersfield post office.   The date was June 1, 1939.  In September of 1947, a true third-class post office was established in Lamont giving Lamont its own postmark for the first time.  Barbara Piymale served as the first Postmistress.  In the years since it has been moved South of the old site on Main Street and is now located between Weedpatch and Lamont.

Today, Lamont is a growing community of more than 14,000.  Agriculture and some oil remain the keys to the local economy.  The Kern County Refinery is situated on the Northern extreme of the Lamont-area just across the intersection from Fuller Acres, known locally as Hilltop.  World-class agribusiness companies now have facilities in the area as well.  While there are some small manufacturing operations, none rival the contribution  agriculture makes to the local economy.

Lamont is an unincorporated community and has been throughout its history.  It depends on the County government of Kern for law enforcement and fire protection services.  Water and sewer are provided by the Lamont Public Utilities District.  Recreational needs are met by the Bear Mountain Recreation and Parks District.  The local schools are Lamont, Alicante, and Mountain View.  Most students still go to Arvin High School, but with the construction of Monte Vista High School near Fairfax, district boundaries changed and so did attendance areas.
