04/20/21    Our ISP has notified me today that they will be unable to continue hosting this site in an updatable format due to their inability to support our nearly 18 year old software. This leaves us with a static site not suitable for regular postings, but able to remain for a while as an archive. I'm 66 and this feels like as good a time as any to wrap this up. I think we've been up for a little over 10 years and have had nearly 200,000 hits.

I encourage any of you who want to grab screen shots of alumni information for use on other newer sites to do so ASAP because we could be shut down at any time now. Special thanks to everybody who participated over the years, especially to those who provided information and feedback. There are other good sites out there and newer the media formats definitely provide for more rapid interaction.  Farrell Neeley (AHS '72).

01/31/21    Class of '57 Memorial Page Update:

There are two updates this morning to the memorial page for the class of 1957.  If you follow the blue hyperlink at the front of this text, it will take you there.  The most recent passings are highlighted in yellow.

01/25/21    There are updates today to the memorial pages of the classes of '67 Class of '67 Memorial Page Updates, '68' Class of '68 Memorial Page Update and '73 Class of '73 Memorial Page Update. Due to the fact that this website software is now 14 years old, is no longer supported by Microsoft, and only accessible through one ISP that I've found, the page entries have to be coded much of the time instead of the entries being as the once were where it was as easy as working in MS Word.

There are now better information sources which are regularly updated for letting classmates know of classmate deaths and other classmate information on sites on Facebook like 'Fallen Bears' and several others. I'd encourage you to transition to those sites to relay information, as this one has now become hit or miss in whether or not we can even access the ISP to make updates. Thanks for your understanding...

02/11/18    Lifetime Achievement Awards Nominations Close on 03/31/18:    We've been receiving our 2018 Lifetime Achievement Awards nominations since the previous year's nominations closed last March; they end for 2018 in a few weeks.  We'll make our selections as usual in April.  We're specifically targeting alumni who were in the Class of '70 or an earlier era, and live outside the local area. The alumni of this time period are age 65 or older.  We would also consider other alumni who have already retired, either due to age or disability, and otherwise fit the criteria.

2018 is of course a year ending in an even number.  In those years we have no formal 'Gathering Of The Bears'. The Gathering Of The Bears is the SilverTips' biennial event where we gather for dinner and publicly honor our Lifetime Achievement Award and Academic Scholarship recipients. In the case of this years LAA honors, we send their plaque and a gift card for a nice dinner in their local area. For our scholarship recipients, we arrange a small dinner locally for them to be recognized. Nominations can be emailed to webmaster@silvertips.org or mailed to SilverTips Alumni Network, PO Box 133, Lamont, CA 93241.

01/04/18    Vietnam Veteran's Memorial Plaque Update: The updates for the plaques have been completed and the plaques will be returned to the wall at Arvin High School as soon as school resumes from the Christmas break. Please remind any alumni or family members that might visit the office that Arvin High School ONLY provides a place for the plaques but is not responsible for them. We've had some unfortunate incidents where people went in and became 'concerned' because they didn't see their name, or the name of a family member, or the name of a classmate, and got upset with the staff. If anyone has a name that needs to be added, tell them to send it to webmaster@silvertips.org and we'll follow up. We need the name, class year, and branch of the military for the alumnus. These plaques are for Vietnam Veterans ONLY and not for Vietnam Era Veterans. While we appreciate everyone's service to our country, this memorial is restricted to that group.

05/28/16       Vietnam War Dead Cenotaphs Dedication:    The dedication of our Vietnam Veteran's Cenotaph Benches will take place on Monday, May 30, 2016 (Memorial Day) at the South Kern Cemetery on South Vineland Road.  The memorial service will get underway promptly at 9:30 a.m.  There is shaded seating available or you can bring a lawn chair.  The Cenotaphs contain the names of ten local men who died in the Vietnam war.   Five of them were Arvin High graduates and the other five men were local men who called Arvin, Lamont, or Weedpatch home at the time of their induction.  This would be a great way to honor our dead friends and classmates and if you bring your children or grandchildren it would be a valuable lesson in the true cost of citizenship.

05/18/16       SilverTips Scholarship Recipients:  We're pleased to announce the names of the two recipients of our 2016 academic scholarships. They are Alexandra Calderon and Jackeline Lopez. Each of the recipients will receive a scholarship for $1,000 to aid them in their studies.  Alexandra will attend CSUB, majoring in engineering with the ultimate goal of becoming a biomedical engineer. 03/30/16    Lifetime Achievement Awards Nominations Close on 03/31/16:    We've been receiving our Lifetime Achievement Awards nominations for two months now and they end tomorrow.  We'll make our selections in April.  We're specifically targeting alumni who were in the '68 or older era and live outside the local area.  The alumni of this time period are age 65 or older this year.  2016 is a year ending in an even number.  In those years we have no 'Gathering Of The Bears'.  The Gathering Of The Bears is the SilverTips' biennial event where we gather for dinner and publicly honor our Lifetime Achievement Award and Academic Scholarship recipients.

2016 Lifetime Achievement Award recipients who live out of the local area will be invited to attend in the 2017 Gathering Of The Bears if they plan to be in the local area.  Our logic here is since it's pretty onerous to travel a great distance for a simple dinner and a small plaque, we try to focus on alumni who no longer live in the area and likely couldn't attend anyway.  So, if you know of an alumnus or alumna who's made a contribution across their lifetime, which has brought honor to Arvin High School, we want to hear about them.

This doesn't mean they have to be a world famous person or a household name.  They could simply be alumni who've made a lasting contribution to their community, to education, to medicine, to business, to religion, to accounting, to sports, to law, and so forth.  They may be people who worked with children, the mentally ill, the medically handicapped, the homeless, or were outstanding foster parents.  This isn't the Nobel Prize, it's meant to honor fellow alumni who've made a difference in the world.  Past recipients have been artists, athletes, civil servants, community activists, educators, inventors, ministers, and scientists.

To nominate someone, please send all the pertinent information you have (i.e., name, address, telephone, email, class year, what they've done, etc.) to webmaster@silvertips.org or you can mail the information to: SilverTips Alumni Network, P.O. Box 21171, Bakersfield, CA 93390-1711.  It will be reviewed and considered when the selection committee gets together in April.  Don't wait too long, a lot of these older alumni are passing quicker than they can be honored.  We also want to consider younger alumni in precarious health, who might not be around to be recognized later.  Get their name in the hat if next year might be too late!

07/16/15    Vietnam Veteran's Memorial:    We continue to add the names of Arvin High School Alumni who served in the Vietnam War to our list of names for the Vietnam Veteran's Memorial at Arvin High School.  Over the years the number of new names we receive has slowed from a flood to a trickle.  I suspect there are still many out there we're unaware of, though to date we've identified more than 80 and once each year we update the perpetual plaque at Arvin High School with the newest names.  I have a neighbor two doors down that I've lived by for ten years; we've had dozens of conversations at the front fence over the years and loaned one another tools or advice.  I never realized he went to Arvin High School, though I knew that all his kids graduated from there.  In the course of a conversation yesterday he mentioned he'd served as a soldier in Vietnam; he'd never said anything in ten years about even being in the army, much less being in Vietnam.  When I asked where he went to high school, he said "Well Arvin of course; so did all my kids."  Today I've added the name of Gilbert Lopez (AHS '65 - USA) to the list of those who served in Vietnam.  Gilbert's name will be added to the perpetual plaque upon the next annual update.  If you have names of those who served that are not listed on our Vietnam Veteran's list, please send us their name, class year, and the branch of the military they served in.   webmaster@silvertips.org

06/26/15    Cyber Attacks On Class Web Sites:    We had a problem with links to the Arvin High School Class of '58 and the Class of '60 web sites.  A Jihadi group from Egypt hacked those sites and took them over.  The stuff they posted wouldn't shock most of us raised in Arvin/Lamont, but it was terribly distasteful and distressing to find two of our classes having to deal with this.  We've reached out the Carlos Royal (AHS '60) who handles these sites and he's working to get this all cleared up.  Once that happens we'll restore the links and life will move forward as before.  Thank you to the three different bears who contacted me to let me know there was a problem.  We have hundreds of links on our site and they don't get checked out by anyone but you and me... and I'm getting slower to get around to all of them. webmaster@silvertips.org

06/17/15    Annual Vietnam Veteran's Memorial Plaque Updates:    Each year after school is out for the summer at Arvin High School we take down the Vietnam Veteran's Memorial plaques and have any new names we've been made aware of added to the plaques.  We then return the plaques back to their place of honor on the wall immediately outside the Arvin High School Principal's office.  This year there were a total of six names that were added; of course some of these names had waited nearly a year to be added.

All of the 82 names on the front page of this web site are now there.  If you read through the list and are certain we've missed someone, just drop us an email and when we do the next update we'll add that name.  I know of a half-dozen other names that people have said they would check out and get back to me on.  Unfortunately, either they never got confirmation or they grew tired of trying.  You're the only source I have;  I don't have a team of researchers working on this.  I want to thank everybody who's provided information and positive comments.  webmaster@silvertips.org

06/14/15    Web Site & Facebook Security Issues:    I'd guess everybody in the world knows about hackers and people of that sort working to interfere with web sites and Facebook pages.  For some reason a lot of those people go after otherwise harmless efforts like ours as a means of practice for hacking bigger and more important sites at a future date.  We're of course always trying to do what we can to prevent this and keep our site and our Facebook pages clean and clear.

In recent months we've had to block Facebook access from several countries around the world due to concerted efforts to infiltrate the page in sufficient numbers to create problems.  Specifically members of radical religious groups create fake profiles and join pages remaining there unobtrusive and benign.  But at some point if they choose to they can make complaints against a page in sufficient numbers that Facebook sees it as legitimate 'friends' complaining about abusive postings on the page.  Facebook will then shut the page down without notice and it's proved near-impossible for these pages to clear their names and be re-instated.  If you research this on Google you'll see the problem is large and growing.

Consequently, earlier today we blocked all people living anywhere in the world other than the United States of America from 'friending' or accessing our Facebook pages.  Unfortunately, if you're an old Bear working or traveling outside the country your access will be blocked while you're away.  We ask for your understanding in this and your continued support as we work to keep our Facebook pages alive and our web site up and running.  Farrell Neeley, Webmaster

06/01/15    Vietnam War Dead Memorial Fundraiser Complete:     A week ago today we publicly announced our plan to place two memorial benches in remembrance of local area veterans who died in the war in Vietnam at the Arvin Cemetery of the South Kern Cemetery District.  On May 9, 2015, we’d made our members and anyone who attended this year’s Gathering of the Bears (GOTB) aware of this effort.  Donations began coming in that very first night.  I’m pleased to announce that thanks to our members, those GOTB attendees, email, phone calls, and direct personal appeals, we have all the funding in hand necessary for the two benches and have paid for them in full earlier today.

As promised, we wanted to let you know we’d reached our funding goal so you don’t send a donation if you hadn’t already pledged to do so.  There are always worthy causes and needs in the Arvin-Lamont area and we’ll be back to ask for donations again someday for something else.  We’re aware that members of AHS Classes of the 1960’s are exploring placing a memorial bench on the Arvin High School campus. As that moves forward, we’re 100 percent supportive of their effort.  As soon as we know more about that plan, we’ll share it here and on our web-site to provide you with the contact information you’d need to become a part of that worthy cause.

Until then, let me thank all of you again who’ve worked with us on this entire project since its inception back in late 2012.  The Vietnam Veteran’s Memorial Plaque with eighty-two names is in place outside the principal’s office at Arvin High School and we update it yearly as the names of Vietnam Veterans who were not initially recognized become known to us.  Next May 30, 2016, we’ll dedicate these two Cenotaph Benches at the annual Memorial Day Observance at the Arvin Cemetery.  Once again I ask that you save that date now and plan to be there with us to honor these local men who gave their lives for the principles of Freedom.

05/13/15    Gathering Of The Bears:    The latest Gathering of the Bears is now history; it was such a great party that it's taken me four days to recover enough to make this posting.  We want to thank the more than 225 of you who attended.  We also want to thank our sponsors, our dedicated year-round volunteers, and all those volunteers who show up on the 'day of' and make this kind of an event possible; we couldn't do it without you.  Congratulations to our Lifetime Achievement Award recipients Dr. James 'Fizzer' Young (AHS '56), Larry Hallum (AHS '61), Jim Slater (AHS '63), Linda 'Smotherman' Carlisle (AHS '63), James Kennedy (AHS '64), Billy Satterfield (AHS '65), Don Kennedy (AHS '67), and Junior Kennedy (AHS '68).  In the mean time you can find pictures and updates right now on Facebook at >SilverTips Alumni Network< or >Gathering of the Bears< or >Arvin High Alumni Association<.

05/02/15    Gathering Of The Bears 2015:    We mailed out the last batch of Gathering Of The Bears tickets today and the Gathering is now seven days away.  As usual we look forward to lots of good food, good friends, and good times.  Gates are open for Happy Hour at 5p, Dinner will be served around 6p, and our Awards Program will get under way around 7p.  Please remember that it's more comfortable and portable for you if you bring a lawn chair.  There is park bench style seating, but lawn chairs have become the favored mode since 2011.

We originally looked at the records of 42 Arvin High School Seniors in selecting our 7 Finalists for this year. All 42 of them were amazing young people and any of them would be a worthy recipient. Today our scholarship committee, composed of Linda 'Culbertson' Burton (AHS '74), Gina 'Burris' Person (AHS '75), and Farrell Neeley (AHS '72) interviewed the final 7.

It is always a very hard decision to make, but in the end we selected Aracely Pulido and Jose Ruezga to each receive a $1,000 scholarship from the SilverTips Alumni Network this year. As is our custom, we've invited both these young Bears and their parents to join us at Shriner's Park on Saturday, May 9, 2015, for the Gathering Of The Bears.

Aracely plans to attend Bakersfield College and Jose plans to attend California State University Bakersfield in the Fall.  Aracely plans to major in Psychology with a goal of becoming an Organizational Psychologist.  Jose plans to major in Electrical Engineering and become a Registered Electrical Engineer.  I know both of them will make us proud and bring honor to their families and their alma mater.

09/11/14    Vietnam Veterans Memorial:    Frequently I'll recognize somebody that went to Arvin High School, but I can't recall their name.  It was that way when I stopped a man at Wal-Mart on Panama Lane late today and said, "...I can't recall your name, but I recall your face and know you went to Arvin High School."  His face lit up and he introduced himself as Manuel Nunez.  When we started talking and I asked what he did after high school, he told me he left high school early and joined the Marines.  He wanted me to know that he hadn't graduated and I probably shouldn't list him as a member of the Class of '68.  I was saddened and ashamed that here was a Veteran unsure we'd want to include him in our Veteran's roster or regard him as a member of the Class of '68.  He was on active duty in the Corp for eight years before coming back to Bakersfield and going to work for the county; he'd retired from the county after 30 years.  Of course there was that two years he spent in Vietnam as a Marine helicopter pilot, which he forgot to mention until I questioned him about what he did in the Marines.  I assured him I wanted to get his information and I wanted to add his name to both our Veteran's roster and the Vietnam Veteran's plaque at the high school and the pages here in our web site.  Thank you Manuel Nunez for your service!  Running into him was a nice way to finish out Patriot's Day for me...

09/10/14    2014 Scholarships:     Today we released the funds for the first of the two $1,000 dollar scholarships we awarded this year, to Denise Alvarez (AHS '14).  Denise is currently carrying a full load at Bakersfield College and remains both positive and optimistic about this new phase in her life.  We expect to hear any day from Lilliana Calderon, who is finishing up her enrollment this week at California State University Bakersfield.  Our scholarship recipients may either bring us proof of their enrollment to obtain the release of funds, or if they need the funds to complete the enrollment, our Secretary-Treasurer either goes with them to the college or university they have chosen, in order to pay the money out directly, or makes arrangements to transfer the funds to the schools' Bursar.

07/11/14    Black Bear Diner:    There's been a rumor going round locally for some time now that there was a Black Bear Diner set to open in Arvin by Fall.  I've finally tracked this story to its end and Black Bear Diners, Inc., tells me that there is a Black Bear Diner coming to Arvin by December of 2014.  Now you need to keep in mind that Arvin in this case is 5552 South Wheeler Ridge Road.  That's in the area of I-5 and the new Outlet Center at the Tejon Complex.  This means there is also a Del Taco, Panda Express, In-N-Out Burger, and a Mauricio's already open in 'Arvin' and we didn't even realize it.  The good news is that there is a Black Bear coming, the bad news is that it's actually a 20 minute drive from beautiful downtown Arvin.

05/25/14    2014 Scholarship Recipients:    This year's SilverTips Alumni Network scholarships for $1,000 each were awarded on Thursday night, May 22, 2014, to Seniors Lilliana Calderon and Denise Alvarez.

Liliana comes from an Arvin family with five girls and one boy, where she is the second eldest child.  Liliana's father is a truck driver for Agrimix and her mother is a  packer for Grimmway farms.  Liliana has a 3.9 GPA and is ranked 10th in her graduating class.  Liliana wants to study biochemistry CSUB, with a long term goal of becoming a nutritionist.  Liliana received the scholarship memorializing Vietnam War Veterans Alvin Bozarth (AHS '65), Kenneth Johnson (AHS '66), Jimmy Montana (AHS '67) and, Ronald Youngblood (AHS 65).  All four of these young men were Killed In Action in Vietnam.

Denise comes from an Arvin family with three girls and one boy.  Her father is a farm worker and her mother is a stay at home mom.  Denise has an older sister who is already attending college, so the financial pressure on her family will only grow more fierce this Fall.  Denise has a 3.8 GPA and is ranked 13th in her graduating class.  Denise wants to study business while taking a minor in music.  Her life goal is to own her own recording company and to be able to record her own music as well.  Denise received the scholarship memorializing Kimberly Reed (AHS '82) who died this past year, after being in poor health for many years.

We expect to hear great things out of both of these young ladies, a few years down the road.

05/17/14    Scholarship Memorials:    Each year we try to give our scholarship away in the memory of a deceased alumnus of Arvin High School.  This year is a little different in that we have two $1,000 scholarships to award, and one of them honors four Arvin High Alumnus, while the second one is being given in memory of an Arvin High Alumna.  Our regular scholarship for 2014 will be given in the names of the four young men from Arvin High School who gave their lives in service of their country, during the War in Vietnam.  They are Alvin Bozarth (AHS '65), Kenneth Johnson (AHS '66), Jimmy Montana (AHS '67), and Ronald Youngblood (AHS '65).  The second scholarship is being given in the name of Kimberly Reed (AHS '82), by her family and friends.  While we're saddened by the death of these Bears, we are excited to be able to help some young Bears get on their way to a higher education.

05/05/14    Busy Month In The Works:    May is our busiest month of the year.   In 'even' years like 2014, we have ongoing activities throughout the year, but in May we're working hard to select, 1) an alumnus to remember with our annual scholarship; 2) a recipient for our annual scholarship;  3) we're reviewing nominations for Lifetime achievement awards; and 4) our President selects the recipient for the annual President's Award.  Add to that scholarship interviews, the senior awards program, and the graduation, and you've eaten up a whole bunch of May.  If you check out the calendar, you are welcome to join us for some of these activities.  I think it's always great to see older alumni in the audience honoring graduating seniors.  So, we hope to see you this month at some activity that promotes alumni and soon to be alumni.

04/12/14    Vietnam Veterans Memorial:    It's funny how names of men who served in Vietnam keep popping up and at times it's from people I know or at least have met, and had no idea that they served in Vietnam.  I found two more today as I was reading biographies from the AHS Class of 1960.  The biographies are posted on their class web site.  Deral Davis and Carlos Royal both ended up in Vietnam and in recounting it, they were almost matter of fact about it.  "Oh yea, I was all over Vietnam from the South Coast to the DMZ."  Or equally as nonplussed, "...I was at the Gulf Tonkin when the pushing and shoving first started."  Once again Gentlemen, thank you for your service!

04/07/14    Lifetime Achievement Awards:    We are receiving nominations for our Lifetime Achievement Awards for about one more month.  We'll make our selections in early May.  We're specifically targeting alumni who were in the '56-'60 era and live outside the local area.  So, if you know of an alumnus who has made a contribution across their lifetime that would bring honor to Arvin High School alumni everywhere, we want to hear about it.  We also want to remember younger alumni who are in precarious health, and might not be around to be recognized if we wait too long.

Now having said that, it doesn't mean they have to have been a world famous person.  They could simply be people who made a lasting contribution to their community, to education, to medicine, to business, to clergy, to accounting, to sports, and so forth.  They could be people who worked with children, with the mentally ill, with the medically handicapped, or outstanding foster parents.  This isn't the Nobel Prize, it's meant to honor fellow alumni who've made a difference in the world.

To nominate someone, please send all the pertinent information you have (i.e., name, address, telephone, email, class year, what they've done, etc.) to webmaster@silvertips.org or you can mail the information to: SilverTips Alumni Network, P.O. Get their name in the hat this year; next year may be too late!

02/04/14    Vietnam Veteran's Memorial Back With Engraver:    We dropped off the newest names we have received with the engraver on Monday.  This has required an additional plaque plate that will be a continuation of the existing plaque.  With these last two, the number of names has grown to 65, with 4 of those 65, Killed In Action.  I suspect that there are several missing names.  But alone I can't do anything to correct that.  On Facebook we get lots of people telling us they'll send along information that we 'forgot'.  The truth is you can't forget something you never knew.  On the other hand, if you knew the information and didn't pass it along, then your friend or family member's name may be missing because 'you forgot'.  Help us out!  Yes, it will take effort and if you don't put it forth, it will never happen.  There's no financial cost to you, only the use of your time to drop us the information at webmaster@silvertips.org

01/08/14    Vietnam Veteran's Memorial Update:    We have a sad update to make today, sad because it went unnoticed by us for so long and sad because our fellow Bear was killed in action in August 1968.  The name we add today is William Ronald (Ronnie) Youngblood.  Ronnie was a member of the Class of '65 and died at the age of 21 in a artillery/mortar/rocket attack, in Binh Long, Vietnam.

01/07/14    New Veteran's Pages Additions:    We've made several additions to the Veteran's pages in recent days.  In some cases we have only partial information and will need your help to fill in the question marks.  New additions, in no particular order, are Shelby Robertson, Harold Lewallen, Jerry Tidwell, Tony Thomas, and Junior Lusk.  Please take a moment if you know any of these men, to go to the veteran's pages link and see if you can provide us with any information that helps remove the question marks (e.g., class year and branch of the military) by their names.

01/05/14    Veteran's Pages Continue To Grow:  Almost two years after we first began to gather the names of AHS alumni who had served in the Military and/or the Vietnam War, the search still goes on.  We continue to hear from folks who have remembered that one of their friends from High School was a Veteran or perhaps even a Veteran of the War in Vietnam.  We'll keep adding them so long as you keep providing the information.  Our sources are only as good as you!  The high school isn't involved and wouldn't have the information.  Please keep that last part in mind when you email.

Last year we had some criticism about what a poor job 'our researchers' have done in this matter.  Of course I immediately fired all our researchers!  I didn't know whether to be amused or angry by the email; there are no researchers!  This has always been a shoestring operation that is fueled as a labor of love.  The only people who care about our classmates, our brothers, our sisters, our cousins, our uncles, our aunts, our fathers, or our mothers who served in the United States Armed Forces are US.  We're all we got!  This means we have to work all the harder, so no one is forgotten.  Send your info to webmaster@silvertips.org
